With touches of technology, entertainment, innovation, and opportunities to sweat and serve, Rotacon 2018 is a district conference designed to engage Rotarians, their guests, and familes for a weekend full of inspirational stories, entertaining sessions, and educational breakouts. Enjoy time with your fellow club members and get to know 1,000 Rotarians and their guests from all over District 6900 in a relaxing and entertaining environment that is Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort.

If you've been to district conference before, you'll notice a few things different at Rotacon 2018. Opportunities to learn in breakout session format about compelling Rotary programs as well as engaging lifestyle learning sessions have been added. General sessions will be designed to take place within 90 minutes so that more time can be dedicated to enjoying time with fellow Rotarians, family, and friends. And perhaps the biggest difference will be that celebration of club achievements will take the form of an Oscars-style service award night in lieu of our traditional club achievement awards which are being moved out of the district conference program to a separate celebration later in the Rotary year.

If you've never been to a district conference, you'll find that Rotacon 2018 is designed with the average Rotarian and guest in mind.

Clubs can express their Hollywood personalities by selecting a favorite movie and asking all participants from their clubs to dress in the style of that movie. The program will wrap up by 7:00 p.m. to allow attendees time to enjoy dinner with their clubs, family, or friends.

Hospitality Suites and Friendship Lounge

One of the most popular aspects of district conference is the Hospitality Suite. A true Rotary tradition, much of the fellowship and magic of a district conference takes place in the Hospitality Suite where people gather to sample food and beverages in a friendly and festive environment.

Sandestin affords an ideal setup for Hospitality Suites where a block of rooms can be assembled all in one general location in the Grand Sandestin. For this year, we currently have nine rooms reserved on the third floor of the Grand Sandestin for club Hospitality Suite use. Clubs that would like to reserve a suite should indicate their interest to Hospitality Suite Co-chairs, Elwyn Gaissert (egaissert2@comcast.net) or Jeanette Jezerinac-Prince (jeannette@mettest.net) by October 31st to help the Conference Committee with planning and coordination. Clubs may host a suite alone or even share a suite with other clubs. Either way, the total number of paid Rotarian registrations by Thursday, March 15th, will be used to determine Hospitality Suite assignments.

Clubs can expect to pay $200/night for one-bedroom units or $286/night for two-bedroom units, plus fees and taxes. After room assignments are made in March, a Hospitality Suite Protocol will be issued for club review and distribution.

And here’s the twist… This year a new district-wide Hospitality Suite will be introduced called the Friendship Lounge. Located in the same area with club Hospitality Suites, the Friendship Lounge will be a place for all conference attendees, especially those that don’t have a Hospitality Suite home, to gather and celebrate. Clubs that would like to participate in hosting the Friendship Lounge will have the option do so for as little as $250. House of Friendship 2.0

The House of Friendship is a well-known part of district conference because it highlights the magnificent work performed by clubs over the Rotary year. At Rotacon 2018, clubs will not be asked to develop scrapbooks as part of any judging or awards process, but clubs who are excited to share their club’s good work will be able to do so by submitting a short video (3 minutes max) which will be played on a district-provided display in the Magnolia Foyer (main registration area).

The Links Golf Club

The Links Golf Club is the original course at Sandestin and was named one of the “Top Five Golf Courses in Northwest Florida” by Florida Golf News, The Links Golf Club is the ultimate in risk-reward golf, offering you some game-changing challenges while also providing spectacular views on the Choctawhatchee Bay. Baytowne Golf Club

This esteemed course is now even more popular after an extensive renovation in 2005 by original course designer, the legendary Tom Jackson. Now offering one of the most sought-after golf experiences in the crowded field of courses in Northwest Florida, the Baytowne Golf Club has twice been hailed by Golf Digest’s Places to Play with a stellar 4 ½ stars ranking. SEASIDE Walking Tour (preregistration required)

SEASIDE®, built on 80 acres on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is located on South Walton County’s Hwy. 30-A, between Panama City Beach and Destin. Acclaimed world-wide as one of the iconic examples of New Urbanism, SEASIDE® offers a thriving town center with shopping and dining, all within walkable distance to homes, cottages and offices. Consisting of more than 300 homes, many of them vacation rentals, the community offers more than 12 restaurants and eateries, and 41 shops and galleries.

At this year’s District Conference, the Saturday evening general session - the Rotacon Academy Service Awards - will be solely focused on recognizing our clubs’ outstanding service projects in an Oscars-style format. The goal is to celebrate Rotary and the good Rotarians do in the world – to celebrate ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE. And to make it fun, each club is asked to choose a favorite movie and have club members dress up in the style of the move.

Each club will have the opportunity to submit their two best projects for consideration. If projects are shared between clubs, then the lead club will prepare the submission. Now is the time to capture all of the awesome projects you do throughout the year in pictures and videos!

Submit Project for Service Oscars

Project submissions will be due by March 15, 2018 through the District website, and should be described in 250 words or less but may be accompanied by photos and video. After an initial round of judging by Assistant Governors to determine award nominees, all Rotarians throughout the District will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite project – because of its impact, uniqueness, scope, innovativeness, the needs it met or because it was so memorable – between April 1 and April 21 through the District website. And then, at District Conference on the evening of Saturday, April 28th, each nominee will be highlighted and your favorite projects will be announced. So let the projects begin and best wishes for great success on everything you do, great or small, that makes this world a better place - that makes a difference!

You might be asking yourself “so, what’s with all of the videos?” Here’s a quick summary.

    <li>Digital scrapbooks – in lieu of a physical scrapbook, clubs should prepare a short video (3 minutes max) to highlight the club's service, fellowship, and anything exciting from the 2017-18 Rotary year.</li>
    <li>Facebook conference contest – just for fun and to help promote the excitement of district conference, put a quick video together highlight how your club likes to celebrate conference. Post the video to your club’s Facebook page and mention District 6900 (@Rotary6900) so that it can be shared to all District 6900 followers. The best video wins their club a free drink for all registered Rotarians.</li>
    <li>Service Oscars video – clubs do NOT need to prepare a video for the Service Oscars, but the do need to submit pictures and unedited video along with the project submission on the district website. The district conference team will take care of editing and preparing all of the videos needed for the Service Oscars.</li>

Where do I go to check in for my room and register for the conference?

When you enter the Sandestin property, you should proceed to The Grand Sandestin to check in for your room. Rotacon 2018 registration will take place in the Baytowne Conference Center.

What is the route for the 5k run/walk?

The 5k route is a basically one loop around Baytowne Ave (on the sidewalk) starting and stopping just outside the front door of the Grand Sandestin.

How far is it from the conference center area to all of the shops, restaurants, and bars?

It's about 200 steps from the conference center to Baytowne Wharf.
