This Week's Speaker

Raised in Michigan as the son of a career Army Aviator, LTC Tim Doherty enlisted in the Michigan Army National Guard in 1986. While still attending High School, he completed his initial entry training during the summer prior to his senior year of High School. He later enrolled at Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Education. As a member of the 1/238th Aviation Regiment he endured Federal Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant when he was only twenty years old. Prior to completing his BS at MSU he was ordered to Ft. Rucker, Alabama to complete Initial Entry Rotary Wing training and become an Army Aviator.

Answering a call to serve as a Medical Evacuation pilot he transferred to the 345th Air Ambulance Company at Dobbin Air Reserve Base and moved to Marietta, Georgia. LTC Doherty continued to be a Medical Evacuation pilot for over 20 years accumulating over 1500 hours of flight with the United States Army Reserve and Georgia Army National Guard. His most notable mission as an evacuation pilot was leading a detachment of three UH-1’s, Hueys, from 148th Air Ambulance Company to conduct medical evacuations immediately following Hurricane Katrina.

LTC Doherty has completed Command and General Staff College, Brigade and Battalion Command Course, Civil Affairs Qualification Course and has held several Command positions. He has also earned a Master’s degree from the University of Georgia in Educational Leadership.

He has deployed twice, once to Camp Victory, Iraq with the 3d Medical Command as an Aeromedical Evacuation Officer and his most recent deployment was to Camp Integrity Afghanistan as the Deputy Surgeon for NATO Special Operations Component Command Afghanistan. LTC Doherty is currently on Active Duty orders while he recovers from injuries sustained during that deployment.

LTC Doherty’s most notable awards and decorations include: Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Medal, Joint Army Commendation Medal, Joint Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Combat Action Badge and Senior Aviator Wings.

LTC Doherty when not on active duty is employed by Fulton County Schools as an Assistant Principal. He lives in Dunwoody Georgia and is a member of the Metro Atlanta Bee Keeper’s Association. He has five children, the three children that are old enough to serve in an Armed Force have already enlisted or committed to enlist in 2017. He is passionate about saving the Honey Bee and reducing Soldier suicide.

Quizbowl

For each of the past 8 years, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has assisted the Coach of the Quizbowl team (this year the Coach is Shannon McCartha )with the training of the Quizbowl team at Peachtree Charter Middle School (PCMS). This is a fantastic opportunity for new as well as experienced Rotarians to work with the best and the brightest kids at Peachtree Charter Middle School (grades 6th thru 8th).

Volunteering is easy. You select the dates that work for your schedule. You will read questions to the students, and tell them if they have given the correct answer correct (Yes, we give the volunteers the answers, so no need to get anxious about needing to know all the answers). Your job is to show the students that someone in addition to their parents and teachers thinks it is okay to be smart, and to help them build their confidence, by giving them the opportunity to demonstrate their competence.

These kids are smart and really grow during the course of the year.

Practices will be held on Thursday afternoon's from 4:15 PM to 5:15 PM at PCMS. If you would like to try volunteering, we ask that you volunteer for at least two weeks during any given month. You can take a month off, or volunteer as many times as your schedule will allow. This is so the kids can get to know you. If you think you would like to try it, please send an email to Rick Otness (otness_r@mindspring.com ) indicating your interest.
