East Cobb Rotary joined 5 other Rotary clubs (Marietta Metro, North Cobb, Smyrna, South Cobb and Vinings) in providing improvements at the Center for Children and Young Adults (CCYA) in Cobb County. CCYA is the non-profit shelter in Cobb County supporting homeless, neglected or abandoned children up to age 21 with a safe, nurturing environment and comprehensive services. Funding came from each club and from District 6900 through the Kathy Myers Memorial Grant. The center operates three separate buildings for housing different groups of children based on their age and needs: Open Gate (girls 12-17), Life Works (boys and girls 17-20) and Another Chance (previously renovated). The mission was to provide metal furniture, special mattresses and laminate flooring for two of the buildings so they cannot become infested with bedbugs or other disease-carrying bugs. The center almost was shut down a year ago due to a major bedbug infestation. Flooring was installed in October, and the Rotary project service day took place November 6, 2015 when all clubs helped discard the old furniture, and assemble and move in new furniture. Twenty-one (21) children residing at the center are beneficiaries of this much-needed upgrade which means their daily home is now safer and healthier.
Kim Borna, Director for the Cobb Center for Children and Young Adults, spoke at the club's weekly meeting on October 26, 2015 giving information about the center and the positive impact this service project would have for everyone involved.
