Getting to Know You
Rick Otness: Helping 5th Graders Be Smarter

Rick Otness's journey with our Rotary club began in 2007, sparked by a friendly obligation to Fred Brandt, his fellow advocate in forming the city of Dunwoody. Little did he know that meeting would lead to 17 years where he has significantly shaped our club's identity and impact. Rick is a past president and served on the board for 14 of his years with the club. He has been involved in nearly every club activity in the past few years. Last year, he received the William M. Mulkey Greater Giving Award in recognition for all he's done - and continues to do - for the club.

Looking ahead, Rick wants to see the club expand our educational initiatives to make a more significant impact on local middle and high schools. His passion for education shined through his favorite club activity, the Quiz Bowl, where he regularly engaged with local middle school students and hosted the annual "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" competition during a club meeting.

Rick went to work for UPS after earning his MBA degree from Harvard. He helped UPS start their marketing department, relocated with them from Connecticut to the Dunwoody area, and then after 22 years of service, accepted a buyout offer that allowed him to step away from the corporate world at just 45 years old. When not dedicated to Rotary, Rick enjoys life in Dunwoody with his wife Maureen and their son, Eric.
