Michael Starling is the Director of Economic Development for the City of Dunwoody, Georgia. Michael has been in this position since 2010 and is responsible for leading the City’s efforts to expand the local economy through business development efforts. Priorities for the City include retention of existing businesses, recruitment of new firms, and the redevelopment of existing commercial areas. [more]

Help Us Welcome Our New GRSP Student!
It is time to officially welcome our GRSP student – Yemariam Workneh from Ethiopia. We will be having a party to officially welcome her on Sunday, September 22 from 3 PM to 7 PM at the home of Bill and Les Woulfin.
Everyone is invited – Rotarians, partners, children. All we ask is that you contact me, Ed Holliday – with the following information:
- Number of people attending (if you, your spouse and your three children are coming, please tell me five people when you respond)
- What you will be bringing - an appetizer, salad/fruit/vegetable, or a dessert. In any case, plan on bringing enough to serve eight people

City of Dunwoody North Shallowford Annex Open House AND Thirsty Thursday
City of Dunwoody North Shallowford Annex Open House - September 18
As Police Chief Billy Grogan mentioned in his talk last Friday, the community is invited to visit the City of Dunwoody’s new North Shallowford Annex during an Open House from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18. The Annex is located at 4470 N. Shallowford Road at the intersection of Peachford Road. The Annex will provide indoor classroom space for Dunwoody Parks & Recreation programming. It will also serve as a new training center for the Dunwoody Police Department. During the Open House, members of the community will be able to tour a new state-of-the-art firearms simulator and defensive tactics training room.

Member Spotlight
Carter Stout
Editor's Note: This week we kick off our weekly Member Spotlight. This will be an opportunity for members to learn more about their fellow Rotarians. That can be learning about the member’s family, business or passions. It is through better stronger relationships that we grow a stronger club.
Our first member in the spotlight is Carter Stout - a member of the Rotary Club of Dunwoody since 2011.George Stewart was his sponsor. Carter served on the Board for several years and held the position of Sergeant-at-Arms. He was also operations manager for RunDunwoody for a couple of years. He is currently chair of the Trustees of the Dunwoody Rotary Charitable Fund. He was named Rotarian of the Year for 2015-16.
Why Rotary? Carter said, "Rotary provides me with an opportunity to make an impact not only in the local community but nationally and internationally."
Carter has been married to Marycarol for almost 25 years. She is a pre-K teacher for the early learning center at Marist. They have two children. Carolann is a senior at OK City University and Anthony is a freshman at Birmingham Southern.
Carter formed Stout Kaiser 12 years ago. The firm practice areas include commercial real estate, corporate matters and litigation. Carter’s main focus is commercial real estate which includes representing buyers, sellers or lenders. Carter and Dunwoody Rotarian Andrew Kaiser also have an affiliate company, Precision Title & Escrow, which provides title insurance for their inhouse transactions but also for other attorneys that don’t have that capability. Good referral sources for Carter are commercial lenders and commercial real estate brokers.

Rotarians Raise Five Fingers to Fight to End Human Trafficking
On August 28, Charlie Augello, Griff Ransom, Louise Barden attended the Metro Atlanta Cross-Club Human Trafficking Coordination meeting at the Hyatt Place in Buckhead. At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees were asked to indicate from one to five their level of commitment to ending human trafficking. All raised five fingers indicating a significant commitment.
During this meeting, many local organizations providing services to the victims of human trafficking spoke. They provided an overview of their organizations and service opportunities for Rotary clubs. Organizations participating included Covenant House, Georgia CAREs, Street Grace, Wellspring Living, Haven, Youth Spark, Beloved Atlanta, and Out of Darkness.
All organizations would need financial support. In addition, most described opportunities for volunteers to prepare and share a meal, donate household goods, provide an activity, or supply a welcome basket of personal items which are needed immediately by victims when they arrive at their facilities. To experience the harsh life of homeless and trafficked victims, Covenant House announced that “Sleep Out American” will be held on November 2 across the entire country. Participants will leave the comfort of their homes and sleep outside. Out of Darkness has received the gift of a large home that will enable them to double the number of victims served. Jeff Shaw suggested that several clubs pool resources and donate $5000 to furnish a room in their new facility. They will have two workdays in September when volunteers can help get the home ready.
In addition to members of the Dunwoody Rotary Club, the group included David McCleary, chair of the Rotary Action Group to End Human Trafficking, and representatives from the Roswell, Alpharetta, Buckhead, and Midtown Rotary Clubs.
Bylaws Update
Two Bylaw Changes Passed
Two bylaws changes related to active member dues and excused absence active member dues were passed by the membership last Friday, September 6 - based on the votes of those present and those who submitted absentee ballots. The changes take effective October 1, 2019 - with the next billing cycle.

Pursuing GRACE
On August 29, Charlie Augello, Griff Ransom and Louise Barden attended the GRACE Commission Meeting at the Georgia Public Training Center in Forsyth (city) GA.
The Georgians for Refuge, Action, Compassion, and Education Commission (GRACE) was created to combat the threat of human trafficking in the State of Georgia. The GRACE Commission is comprised of public officials, law enforcement, for-profit and non-profit organizations, faith-based institutions, and subject matter experts who tackle human trafficking, seek justice for victims, hold bad actors accountable, and end human trafficking.
First Lady Marty Kemp opened the meeting during which Vic Reynolds (Director, GBI), Chris Carr (Attorney General), Michelle Wallace (Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations at Grady Memorial Hospital), Professor Jonathan Tobres (GSU School of Law) and others shared their efforts to help end human trafficking.
Public comments and a question and answer period followed.
Representatives of the Roswell, Alpharetta and Buckhead Rotary Clubs and Dave McCleary, Vice chair Rotary Action Group Against Slavery and member of the GRACE commission also attended. Several trafficking survivors provided comments and strongly urged the commission to invite a survivor to join the commission.
