Former Rotarian Mike Shortal Passes Away


Former Dunwoody Rotarian Terence Michael “Mike” Shortal went home to God on June 17, 2024 surrounded by his Family. His Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on July 27, 2024 at Holy Innocents’ Church, 805 Mt Vernon Hwy NW, Atlanta. He will be buried with full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery on a date yet to be determined.

Mike was born on OCT 13, 1937, the fourth of five children to Harold and Catherine Shortal in St Louis, MO. At the age of nine, his family moved to a farm near the small rural community of Wright City, MO. During high school he was involved with music, athletics and bringing modern and innovative farming practices to our family farm. After working for a year, he enrolled in the University of Missouri and graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree with a minor in Business. In college he continued his love for music by singing and directing in all-student musicals. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta social fraternity.

Upon graduation, Mike was commissioned in the U S Navy as an Ensign. He served for 20 plus years in the Navy, including two tours in Vietnam, and retired as a Captain. During his early years in the Navy, while stationed at the Navy Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA, he met the love of his life, Linda and they spent the rest of his life together. After retirement from the Navy they moved to McLean, VA where he and two others started highly successful Kastle Systems Company in Northern Virginia

Mike and family moved to Sandy Springs, GA in 2011. He and Linda have two children, Jennifer (Brent) and Brad (Jill) and four grandchildren. Mike was highly successful in all facets of life. He was a friend to all and a mentor to many. He used his God given talents to the fullest. He left the world a better place!
