Kody Miller, Fades for faith providing support to those in need

For most, the task of getting a hair cut is trivial. It is rarely given much thought. For some, however, it is a struggle.

On Monday, February 22, 2021, Kodi Miller, the Executive Director and founder of Fades for Faith told the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs of her fledgling non-profit business.

In photo: Kody Miller Executive Director of Fades for Faith, John Neill, 2020,2021 President of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs.

Kody Miller is an Atlanta native and master barber currently working at 1818 Fine Men’s Salon in Brookhaven. But there is much more to Kody than one might think. She has started her own business that is true to the Rotary Four Way test.

Fades for Faith is a 501-C3 that was started at the end of 2019. Initially started by going into group homes, foster care or homeless shelters looking for ways to help, she discovered quickly that there was never enough money in the meager budgets to handle hair care. Knowing she could help; she gathered a small team and began to interact with different group homes around her area to offer free grooming services. Services like beard care, hair care, free products and support of someone who cares are provided by her team.

Working with drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in and around Sandy Springs, her business has taken off. Presently she and her small band of master barbers go into these centers two and three times a month. She partners with local schools to have the more senior student barbers join her. This provides the student barbers a chance to gain experience and expertise.

She told a story of a 19-year-old man in recovery whose entire demeanor was impacted for the positive because of the seemingly small investment of a proper grooming treatment. She could visibly see his confidence and posture change during the session.

Kody was amazed at something that seems as simple as a haircut could be so influential.

The Rotary Club of Sandy would like to thank Kody for her outstanding devotion to our community.

Past Program
Rick Walker, Patent Attorney describes a few "Wacky Patents"

This past Monday, March 1, Rick Walker gave our club a presentation on “Wacky Patents”. Mark is a patent attorney and can speak from experience. Before he took to the wacky side, he explained to us the differences between Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks and Trade Secrets.

His PowerPoint presentation discussed many wacky patents that have been applied for over the years. Many were quite outrageous, such as, Prince’s patent on a guitar, Michael Jackson’s patent on a shoe enhancing device, a unicycle with training wheels, a portable electric mouse trap, an anti-eating face mask, cheese filtered cigarettes, an instant face lift device, a jaw exercise device, a snake handling leash, diapers for birds, several golf training aids, diapers for dogs, a light bulb changer, an electrified picnic blanket, a beer umbrella, a method for covering baldness (comb over), a cubed tennis ball, and a chopstick training device. Those were the more entertaining ideas and he presented many more.

Got an idea? Get a patent to protect it. (or a trademark, or a copyright, or designate it a trade secret)

In the photo: Rick Walker, Partner at CBW - Intellectual Property & Trade Association Law, John Neill, 2020-2021 President of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs.

Lastly, he gave a list of inventions that we should not try to patent: Waterproof towel, Glow in the dark sunglasses, solar powered flashlight, submarine screen doors, a book on how to read, inflatable dart boards, a dictionary index, dehydrated water (just add water), waterproof teabags, and a helicopter ejector seat.

The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs would like to thank Rick for showing us the lighter side of being an attorney.
